Honors & Awards

William Blake was not recognized as a poet and painter when he was alive; hence he was not given any honors or awards. Nevertheless, Blake has a great influence on the artists of the 20th century and the Blake Prize is awarded to artists in his honour.

The Blake Prize was founded in 1949 by R. Morley, the Reverend Michael Scott SJ, Rector of Newman College, University of Melbourne, and lawyer M. Tenison. This prize actually consists of four awards – the Blake Prize, John Coburn Emerging Artist Award, the MUA Blake Prize for Human Justice and the Blake Poetry Prize. The Blake Prize is mainly to encourage people to explore and experiment with themes of humanity, justice and belief through art and literature.
